“The Future of Energy in Europe”
Monday 30 January, 20:00 - 22:00
The war in Ukraine made ‘energy’ an important topic of political discussion throughout Europe.
While more and more people suffer from energy poverty, the transition to sustainable energy is in full swing. Geopolitical goals, environmental ideals and the economical reality clash. How can we solve this crisis?
During this talk speakers with different backgrounds will discuss several questions relating to the topic.
Speaking about the environment is Faustine Bas-Defossez. She is well-versed in environmental policies in the EU, having worked at the European Commission and the Institute for European Environmental Policy on Agriculture and Land Management. Currently she is Director for nature, health and environment at the European Environmental Bureau, the largest Federation of Environmental NGO’s.
Speaking about geopolitics is Álvaro Rangel Hernandez. Álvaro Rangel studied Law in Spain and specialised in International Relations and Geopolitics. He has a Master in European Political and Governance Studies from the College of Europe and has worked since 2020 in the European Commission.
Speaking about economics is Prof. Dr. Machiel Mulder. He is chair of the Centre for Energy Economics Research at the RUG and appears frequently in the news as an expert on the energy transition. Furthermore, he published a book on the topic just last year titled ‘Energietransitie; eerst snappen, dan doen’ or ‘Energytransition; understand first, act second‘.
