Sports can play a surprisingly important political role. The soccer World Cup Championship of 2022 has been doused by controversies due to Qatar’s questionable human rights record regarding, amongst others, the abuse of migrant workers and LGBTQ+. Dr. Sandra Meeuwsen, director of the ‘Erasmus Centre for Sports Integrity & Transition’, will provide perspectives on the ethics of the Qatar FIFA World Cup and the human rights violations associated with this event. From her background as a sports philosopher, she will address how discussions about how sports can most effectively contribute to democracy, peace, and international understanding can come to have a crucial role.
