“Space law 101” by Deepika Jeyakodi

Deepika Jeyakodi works as a space lawyer and is a member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL). Space lawyers concern themselves with a combination of international, public and private law which regulates the use of outer space, the privatisation of space discovery and complex topics like space debris. Although space law is discussed in many fora, both national, bilateral and international, and enshrined in international treaties like the Outer Space Treaty and the Moon Treaty, many topics are still subject of discussion; for example, in 2017 Luxembourg passed a law implying that companies could acquire property rights over natural resources in space even though in international law it is ambiguous whether or not such property rights could be legal. 

In this lecture, ms. Jeyakodi will provide us with an introduction to her field. She’ll then provide us with an overview of the evolution of space law from the cold-war era to now. The audience will also be asked to exchange views about the challenges facing forward.
