Simon Glendinning: What does it mean to be European?

16-10-2017 at 20:00 - 22:00

What does it mean to be European?

In these turbulent times for Europe, we look at what it means to be European. What makes an some individuals “European” and what makes others, who by geographical standards would be considered so, reject a European identity? No-one is entirely removed from this issue: everybody has some relation to the notion of Europeanness. Yet not everyone “belongs” to it. Some are “foreign” to Europe, even if not entirely foreign to everything European. At the same time, Europeans are foreigners elsewhere, even if not entirely foreign to what is non-European there.

In this lecture, Professor Simon Glendinning will tackle this complex subject, exploring what it means to be and not to be a European. As Professor of European Philosophy at the European Institute of the London School of Economics, he is well versed in everything philosophical about Europe. European identities are one of his main research interests. How should we understand the divisions among humanity which identity – European or otherwise – can make? How deep do these differences go? And what logic, if any, does this kind of identity or identification follow?
