SIB x Europe Direct present: The Aftermath of the German Election
Monday 8 November 2021, 20:00 - 21:30
Germany‘s voters have decided how Germany’s new Bundestag will look like in the upcoming 4 years. Now it’s up to party leaders to thrash out who will succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel after 16 years in office and with which political priorities. However, it could take weeks or months to put a new administration in place as there are majorities for three plausible coalition governments. What does the process of coalition formation look like? What are the consequences of elections not only for Germany but also how the policy of the potential coalition between winning parties will influence the EU? In order to answer those questions, we invited Hanco Jürgens and René Cuperus. Mr Jurgens is a research associate at the Germany Institute Amsterdam. He is concerned with the modern history of Germany from a European perspective. Additionally, Mr Jürgens is a co-author of “The Wings of the Eagle, German Issues in a European Perspective”. On the other hand, René Cuperus is a Senior Research Associate at the Clingendael Institute and Research Fellow at the Germany Institute of the University of Amsterdam. Moreover, he writes a political column for the Dutch daily newspaper De Volkskrant.
