Riding the Wave: Europe’s Stance on Far-Right Populism
Over the span of two tumultuous decades, Europe finds itself at a crossroads, where a landscape marked by uncertainty has paved the way for the ascendance of populist sentiments intertwined with far-right ideologies. As the European Parliament’s election results bring change looming on the horizon, the stage is set for the emergence of new political actors amidst a climate characterized by fractured unity, simmering geopolitical tensions, and an ever-blurring distinction between conservative and far-right factions. In this volatile electoral cycle, the pressing question looms: What lies ahead for Europe, and what factors have contributed to the enduring allure of populism as a political ethos? Dr Georgios Samaras, Assistant Professor of Public Policy at King’s College London, endeavours to shed light on these burning inquiries, offering insights into the complexities of the contemporary European political landscape.
Dr Georgios Samaras holds the position of Assistant Professor in Public Policy at the International School for Government and Policy Institute, King’s College London. His research scope includes investigations into communication strategies employed by far-right extremist groups in the 21st century. Additionally, he delves into unconstitutional practices within politics and formulates policy measures to counteract instances of democratic norm abuse. Dr Samaras is currently leading a study on Greek voting behaviour funded by the ETERON Institute. Furthermore, he holds the position of Senior Research Associate at the ENA Institute in Athens. Dr Samaras also serves as a political adviser in Greece and is recognised as a Fellow of the Populism Team and the Higher Education Academy of the UK.
