Online Election Debate: The Netherlands in a Global World

The Dutch elections for the House of Representatives will be held on 17 March 2021. In this debate we will have a look at The Netherlands in a global context. We will talk to party representatives from both sides on the political spectrum. What are their views on global topics like climate, the EU, Brexit, and migration. 

Representatives in the debate are from: VVD, CDA, GroenLinks and Volt.

Debate themes:
1) The Netherlands and Great Power Politics
2) The Netherlands and the EU in times of Crisis
3) Migration and Development Assistance 
4) Climate Change and Sustainability

20.00 – 20.10      Welcome – Introduction of the moderator and party representatives followed by elevator pitches
20.10 – 20.30Introduction of theme 1 – The Netherlands and Great Power Politics  
 Standpoint of each party 
 Debate: ‘ The Netherlands should take a pragmatic and not principled stance towards great powers.’ 
20.30 – 20.50 Introduction of theme 1 – Netherlands and the EU in times of crisis
 Standpoint of each party 
 Debate: “To be able to address current and future crises, the solidarity among EU member states should be strengthened” 
20.50 – 21.10Introduction of theme 2 – Migration and Development Assistance
 Standpoint of each party 
 Debate “The Netherlands should take a much more active stance in the fight against global inequalities”
21.10 – 21.25 Introduction of theme 3 – Climate Change and Sustainability 
 Standpoint of each party 
 Debate: “The Dutch policy toward climate change and sustainable development is too little, too late”
