“Member of parliament and a student” by Julian Bushoff
Monday 20 February, 20:00 - 22:00
Julian Bushoff was born and raised in and around Groningen. At the age of 21 he was chosen to the Groningen Municipality council for the Labour Party (PVDA). Some months later he was chosen to be the chairman for PVDA in the municipality becoming the youngest chairman in the history of Groningen. During the Dutch parliamentary election of 2021 he helped write the national party’s election program and ended up on the national ballot in place 13. While he was not elected immediately to the Dutch house of representatives he became a member after the departure of the former speaker. At 25 he is currently one of the youngest representatives and all this while still following two studies at the RUG.
Both at the municipal level as well as the national level he has devoted himself to social themes. In Groningen he focused on humane asylum for refugee children and on improving the economic position of people living in poverty. On the national level he also focuses on climate change and the current housing crisis.
In this lecture Julian will talk about his experiences as a young politician. He will speak about how he manages to do his studies while being in politics, the struggles he goes through and what motivates him. As both a politician and a student from Groningen he understands both worlds and will be open to debate about topics that interest students.
