“Lobbying in the European Parliament” by Peter Teffer
Monday 4 September, 20:00 - 22:00
note: Location is Doopsgezinde Kerk.
It is no secret that lobbying has become an integral part of the political landscape, and the European Parliament represents a key arena where interest groups seek to influence laws that impact millions of people. However, how does lobbying work in the EU? What rules are in place to prevent undue influence? And do those rules work?
In a democracy, lobbying is a crucial aspect of policy-making. But following the Qatargate scandal, which allegedly involved Members of the European Parliament accepting bribes, there is renewed focus on strengthening the rules of the game. The European Parliament is working on new safeguards to prevent new scandals. A topical issue, with the European Parliament elections coming next year.
Peter Teffer, investigative journalist for Follow the Money, will discuss the current and proposed rules, and how lobbyists may still continue to operate unregulated.
