Lecture: “The Panama Papers” by Anne Scheltema Debuin

25-04-2016 at 20:00 - 21:30

This lecture is about the one of the biggest leaks ever, larger than the US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks in 2010, and the secret intelligence documents given to journalists by Edward Snowden in 2013, and will be given by Anne Scheltema Beduin, the executive director of Transparancy International. Join us for this lecture about this extremely relevant subject and the drinks afterwards, organized by Pharmaciae Sacrum, the study association of pharmacy, and SIB-Groningen, the international student association that organizes weekly intellectual activities combined with drinks.

The Panama Papers are an unprecedented leak of 11.5m files from the database of the world’s fourth biggest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca. The documents show the myriad ways in which the rich can exploit secretive offshore tax regimes. Twelve national leaders are among 143 politicians, their families and close associates from around the world known to have been using offshore tax havens.

Ms Scheltema Beduin will explain briefly what the Panama Papers are about, which developments we can expect in the upcoming months, how tax evasion via offshore firms works and what possible solutions are. Not only did she write articles about this subject and is asked by several Dutch media to give her opinion, she currently is the head of Transparancy International, an international NGO that is, according to the Global Go To Think Tank Index Report, one of the world’s best think tanks. Its nonprofit purpose is to take action to combat corruption and prevent criminal activities arising from corruption. It publishes for example the Global Corruption Barometer and the Corruption Perceptions Index. Before managing this NGO, she was a general manager at the World Legal Forum Foundation and a human rights lawyer.
