Monday 22 May 2023, 20:00 - 22:00
Martijn Dadema became the mayor of Raalte, a municipality counting roughly 40.000 inhabitants in the east of the Netherlands, in 2014. For his work as mayor, he has been nominated for an award for the best Local Governor in 2018, 2019 and 2020. He started his political career in 2004 in the Dutch Green Left Party, where he held several board positions.
Before becoming mayor, mr. Dadema worked at the ministry of foreign affairs and at several programmes of the United Nations, including in Yemen and Kenya, as well as at the representation of the Netherlands at the UN in New York. While in Kenya, he was active for the UN Environmental Programme and UN Human Settlements Programme and worked on the Global Environmental Outlook, a series of reports on the state of the environment issued by the UN.
While working in foreign relations he focused on international peace and security, development cooperation, and arms control. Moreover, he has been involved in the development of the concept of responsibility to protect – R2P. One of the core tenets of R2P is that the international community has a duty to protect populations from genocide, war crimes and other crimes against humanity.
