Sinti and Roma: Transition from Oppression to Empowerment by Ingo Lindemann
Thursday 10 October, 20:00 - 22:00
The Sinti and Roma are a community that has long been among the forgotten victims of the Holocaust. Despite enduring unimaginable suffering, the Sinti and Roma have made significant strides since 1945. Through self-organisation and joint efforts they have been able to achieve some of their most important political goals and rights like the recognition as a national minority in Germany. Nonetheless, the fight against exclusion and discrimination of the Sinti and Roma remains urgent today.
For over ten years Ingo Lindemann has been working in the 1. Sinti-Verein Ostfriesland e.V., a regional association affiliated with the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma. For the past six years, he has served as the deputy chairman of the association, and for the last two years, he has been an elected board member of the Central Council.
In this lecture, Ingo Lindemann will give you an overview of the history of the Sinti and Roma. He will also explain how activists for the rights of Sinti and Roma have been able to attain their goals and how they fight discrimination up to the present day.
