Lecture by Ankie Broekers-Knol, President of the Dutch Senate
7 February at 20:00 - 22:00
In September 2018, President of the Dutch Senate Ankie Broekers-Knol announced she would not be returning to politics after the coming elections. After 18 years of being a senator, she would quit politics indefinitely. Having served as president for 6 years when she steps down, and a total of 18 years as a senator, she was present in the inner circles of Dutch politics during the most intense political times of the past few decades.
Since 2001, when she became a senator, she has seen Dutch and European politics change drastically. 7 Dutch governments came and went, 3 EU Commission Presidents, and 3 US Presidents. Right-wing populism, which currently dominates the political narrative, only gained mainstream traction in the early 2000s. The War on Terror, the War in Georgia, and the Annexation of the Crimea all happened post-2001.
On 7 February, she will join us at the Van Swinderenhuys, to talk about these past 18 years, and about her experience in the inner circles of Dutch Politics.
This event is free and open to everyone.
