Lecture and Documentary Night: City of Two Springs

1 April at 20:00 - 22:00

During this night, we have organised a special programme. This night will consist of 2 short lectures, followed by the documentary City of Two Springs, which will premiere at the Hague Movie Festival of Movies that Matter. The theme of the night will be the rebuilding of Irak. After almost two decades of violence, beginning with the US invasion of Iraq and recently ending with the defeat of ISIS in Iraq, the time of restoration has arrived.

The first speaker of the night will be Esther Schoorel. She is a university lecturer from the University of Groningen Department of Middle-Eastern Studies. She will give a short recap of the political situation in Irak since the outbreak of large scale sectarian violence in 2006.

The second speaker will be Frederick Mansell. He is one of the two directors of the documentary City of Two Springs, which we will view later during the night. He has been a freelance writer and filmmaker for more than 15 years now, helping produce documentaries like Ultras of Egypt, Team Gaza, and Through the eyes of Arna. He will give a short lecture on the making and subject of the documentary.

After these 2 short lectures, we will watch the documentary ‘City of Two Springs’. When war with IS in Iraq is almost concluded, 11 year old girl Ala’ wants to return to her house in Mosul. Through Ala’s eyes we discover how war pervades the life of one human being. Parallel to Ala’s story Lise Grande, head of the humanitarian mission of the United Nations, and Dutch ambassador Jan Waltmans try to help people returning to Mosul safely. In the search for a new future, hope proves to be as valuable as scarce. ‘City of two springs’ is an intimate film about human resilience in the most difficult circumstances possible.

This event is free and open to everyone.
