Joint SIB/TEIMUN Lecture – In Discussion on Diplomacy with Caecilia van Peski – UN75

Thursday 15 October 2020, 19:00 - 21:00

The UN is marking its 75th anniversary at a time of great disruption for the world, compounded by an unprecedented global health crisis with severe economic and social impacts. Will we emerge stronger and better equipped to work together? Or will distrust and isolation grow further? 2020 must be a year of dialogue, when we come together to discuss our priorities as a human family, and how we can build a better future for all.

SIB is organizing a series of lectures to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the UN, the first of which has been co-organized with TEIMUN. Together with the TEIMUN Foundation we have arranged for an online lecture led by SIB, followed by a virtual UN Simulation led by the TEIMUN Society Committee.

Caecilia van Peski – OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine, Shyrokyne Stand-off – 23 April 2015

For the lecture part of this event we will be joined by Caecilia van Peski, a most honourable speaker who has a wealth of experience in the field of diplomacy. Caecilia is not only part of our Board of Recommendation, but is also Chair of the Board of Advisors of the Netherlands United Nations Association, as well as currently occupying some 16 other Governing Positions in various boards and committees related to the field of international relations.

Caecilia will be joining us from a location working in the field. She has worked as the Head of Professional Development & Training at The Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance in Switzerland, as the Chief of  the Peace Programming Section at the UNDP in Germany, and as a Monitoring Officer at the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. These are only a few of Caecilia’s diverse experiences in the field of the last decade, but it’s safe to say that she has a wealth experience which she will be able to share with you today.

From Caecilia’s site; From the inception of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in 2000 to the subsequent formulation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the UN 2030 Agenda in 2015, Caecilia Johanna van Peski has been generating action in support of a more safe, secure and equitable world. Through her work on SDG#16 ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’, she actively contributes to the building of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

This Thursday, Caecilia will be joining us to tell a little about her international experiences and give you some insights as to what it’s like to be involved in international affairs, on the ground, internationally.

The TEIMUN Foundation annually organises The European International Model United Nations in The Hague in the summer. To prepare Groninger students for this final event, TEIMUN Society hosts weekly sessions where they train relevant skills and have fun with mock-simulations. Usually these sessions take place on Thursdays at 19:00, however to give room for the discussion the session has been pushed back to after 20:30. So if you want to take part in a simulation of the United Nations in action and put what you learn from our speaker into practice, please stick around in the zoom call to join in the discussion.

The lecture will take place via zoom and is open and free for everybody. Furthermore, it will be livestreamed on SIB-Groningen’s facebook page and youtube channel. The simulation afterwards will take place in the same call, but won’t be livestreamed, so please join through zoom if you’re interested.
