Andrew Stroehlein: How to promote a crisis?

A war has broken out in Ruritania, and both government forces and the rebels are committing mass atrocities – war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and, some say, genocide. Famine is looming. The situation demands international attention from international media, from the UN and international agencies, and from governments with the resources to stop – or at least slow – the killing. But Ruritania is far away, few people know much about it, and fewer care. There are a lot of problems in the world, how do you make people pay attention to this one? And how does attention lead to action to help the victims?

Andrew Stroehlein is a journalist and communications expert with American, Belgian, and British backgrounds, currently serving as the European Media Director at Human Rights Watch. Based in Brussels, he oversees the organization’s media operations across Europe, Central Asia, and West Africa. Prior to this role, he spent nine years as the Director of Communications at the International Crisis Group.
