“Ideal Science – a long lost dream?” Lecture by Dr Stephan Schleim

Monday 15 November, 20:00 - 21:45

Discussions about climate change or vaccinations show that science is not only important for scientists but also society, perhaps even the survival of mankind. At the same time, failed replications, fraud, and power abuse seem to be persistent problems, and we hear more about science going wrong in the news.

In this interactive lecture, you will be invited to discuss what science is and what it should be for. The speaker, Stephan Schleim, will present different perspectives on actual and ideal science. Whether you are considering becoming a scientist yourself or just want to benefit from science as a citizen, knowing more about these processes can be important. Where and how is science going wrong and what can we do about it? What can we as future scientists do to make a change?

Stephan Schleim is Associate professor at the University of Groningen. He studied philosophy, psychology, and computer science (M.A. 2005) and then did a PhD in cognitive science (2009) before becoming a theoretical psychologist at the RUG. His field of expertise is philosophy and sociology of science, and he has also been an active science writer and blogger for more than 15 years, regularly commenting on scientific discoveries in the media (e.g. on “brain doping”).
