How to Cope with the Afghan Crisis? A lecture by Peter Knoope

Monday 6 September 2021, 20:00 - 21:30

Since early May this year, the Taliban have unexpectedly suddenly taken over control of the now Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Over 400,000 Afghans have become homeless, thousands have fled the country, and thousands more are looking to find ways to escape the Taliban’s clutches. European countries fear a repeat of the 2015 migrant crisis, looking at the women and children fleeing the Taliban more as a horde of immigrants than as people who need help. Afghans and internationals fear for the future, as chaos and disarray have encompassed the capital Kabul. How can humanitarian organizations and international organisations cope with this crisis under such circumstances?

To answer this question we will be joined by Peter Knoope, who was the Head of Mission to Afghanistan and headed the Humanitarian Aid section at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He will provide insights into the efficient cooperation of humanitarian organisations and discuss the possible struggles that Afghans may face under the new Taliban regime.
