Hillel Neuer: On the shortcomings of the United Nations
30-04-2018 at 20:00 - 22:00
Delivery Failed? On the Shortcomings of the United Nations
70 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This historic document stipulates the fundamental rights which apply to all human beings. But does the UN actually live up to its promise of promoting “respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion”? Or has it failed to deliver – with, for example, the Saudi Arabian regime being part of the Human Rights Council?
According to UN Watch, a human rights NGO based in Geneva, the “fundamental principles of the UN Charter are often ignored or selectively upheld”. Its executive director, Hillel C. Neuer, will deliver a lecture about the problems which mark the UN and the opportunities for improvement.
Neuer appears regularly before the UN Human Rights Council, intervening for the victims of Darfur, the rights of women, political prisoners in China, Russia and Zimbabwe, and the cause of Middle East peace. He has frequently been quoted as an expert on UN and human rights issues by the New York Times, Die Welt and Le Figaro, and has appeared on CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera.
