Ethnic Violence in Myanmar: The Enemy Within?
Myanmar is in crisis. Last December, UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed his concern over the “catastrophic” humanitarian in the country. Out of the one million Rohingya – a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority – who lived there before 2016, almost two-thirds have felt the need to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh to escape a growing wave of ethnic violence. Aung San Suu Kyi, the ‘liberal democrat’ who was elected President after years of exile and replaced the military government, seems to care little about it. Yet how has this situation come to be?
Tonight, journalist Francis Wade will talk about his book Myanmar’s Enemy Within: Buddhist Violence and the Making of a Muslim ‘Other’ (2017), which tells the story of increasing mass attacks against the Rohingya people. Wade is an independent journalist and analyst based in Bangkok, focussing on Myanmar and Southeast Asia. Between 2009 and 2012, he headed the English language team at the Democratic Voice of Burma news organisation. Wade has since produced articles for leading international media including The Guardian, TIME, Foreign Policy, Al Jazeera and The Times.
