Erdoğan’s Turkey: Towards a new Sultanate?

10-04-2017 at 20:00 - 21:30

The future of Turkey lies in the hands of it citizens when, on the 16th of April, they will vote on the referendum to increase the powers of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. A vote, which if cast in favour of President Erdoğan, will be a transformative moment in the history of the modern Turkish state. During this lecture we will look to the past and discuss how Turkey has evolved over the past decades and how those changes have enabled President Erdoğan to strengthen his position. Next we will discuss the current situation in Turkey, also with regards to the freedom of speech there and further analysing the importance of informal networks in Turkish society. But we will also look forward to the referendum itself and see what consequences a vote either way will mean.

To provide clarity on such a complex subject we will receive Joost Lagendijk, who has written an extensive biography on Erdogan and Froukje Santing, a journalist with a lot of expertise on Turkey.

The lecture is open and free for everyone!
