Lecture on Journalism by Dr. Scott Eldridge Il, organised by Dispuut Max Haveloos
Monday 18 December 2023, 20:00 - 22:00
‘Journalism and the Emergence of Digital and Alternative Journalism in the 21st Century’
This lecture will focus on journalism and the emergence of digital and alternative journalism since the turn of the century. The media were initially seen as a widening of journalistic voices, and a possible path towards greater news diversity and stronger democracies. Scott Elridge will show how this has worked out quite differently, widening polarized divisions and contributing to populism. The lecture will draw from some of Scott Elridge’s own works, and some projects he’s been an editor on that look across Europe and the world to explore similar dynamics.
Dr. Scott Eldridge Il, currently an assistant professor at the University of Groningen’s Centre for Media and Journalism Studies, has a rich academic background. Previously a full-time Lecturer and researcher at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Journalism Studies (2014-2016), he has delved into digital journalism studies and journalism studies. His research specifically explores journalistic identities, boundaries, and the dynamics of interloping media actors within the journalistic field.
