“Democratising STEM Learning” By Dr J. Noel-Storr
Monday 31 January, 20:00 - 22:00
The Frontiers of Science are not just for the rich: Democratising STEM Learning
When a group of white Anglo-Saxon, heterosexual, cis-gender, “all-American” chaps went to the Moon, they left a plaque behind announcing that they had made the journey on behalf of all mankind. Even their very presence was heralded as a giant leap for us all. But did they really mean it?
It is clear that almost for our very survival that we need everyone on the planet to be able to be STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Literate, critically thinking, global learners. We live in an age where we apparently relish our “free mainstream media” democratising each human’s right to their own views and opinions, while we do not respect sharing scientific knowledge, principles or practice in the same way.
What should we be concerned about to make sure that we are also democratising knowledge and learning to all – both within nations, and across the global community? Without that democratisation of thinking, we will live in a world where we are ruled by individual opinion, and our fate may be sealed.
