Debate: The challenge of the energy transition: will nuclear energy save us?
Monday 13 December 2021, 20:00 - 22:00
Between 1990 and 2018 electricity demand doubled. Moreover, it is expected to roughly double again by 2050. Unfortunately, at present, about two-thirds of electricity is produced from the burning of fossil fuels. There is no denying that there is a need for an urgent switch from fossil fuels to more environmentally friendly sources of energy. It leads to a question: can nuclear energy be used to mitigate climate change. In collaboration with Green Office, we invited Prof. Dr Georg Steinhauser from The High Scientific Council of The European Nuclear Society and Mr Jan Haverkamp, a senior expert on nuclear energy and energy policy at Greenpeace Netherlands for the debate, where they will provide more insight to this burning question. In three rounds: Environmental Impact, Safety and Economy, speakers will try to protect their statements. Then they will also answer questions from the audience. The debate will be moderated by Prof André Faaij, who as a member of IPCC, was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
