“Between Protests And The Pandemic: An American Journalist in Moscow” By Joshua Yaffa
Monday 27 September 2021, 20:00 - 22:00
Last year in Russia was definitely not easy. The Covid-19 caused (according to official statistics) almost 200 000 deaths. But the worldwide pandemic wasn’t the only problem that largely affected Russian society. In January 2021, Alexey Navalny, opposition leader and anti-corruption activist, was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. He was returning from Germany, where he had spent five months recovering from being poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok. How have those events changed Russian politics and society? To answer that question, we will be joined online by Joshua Yaffa, a correspondent for The New Yorker, based primarily in Moscow. He has also written for The Economist, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic. Additionally, Mr Yaffa will share his experience of what it has been like to report these events as a Western journalist.
