Symposium: ‘’Western Interventions in the Middle East: Help- or harmful?”

12-09-2016 at 20:00 - 21:30

Western powers are well-known for their often controversial military interventions in the Middle East. Yet, how effective are those military interventions? Have they resulted in a more stable and safer environment? These questions will be answered by two speakers, who will each give a short lecture about the country of his/her expertise. This event is organized by our Introduction Committee and is, like all our Monday evenings, open and free for every student.

Ruud Hoff will talk about the current military intervention in Syria. He is a Dutch historian and politicologist, who is well-known for his expertise on the Middle East. He is a guest lecturer at the Clingendael Institute and is a teacher at the School of Journalism in Utrecht. He has had several books about the Middle East published. Mr Hoff will be discussing the situation in Syria.

He will be joined by Tim Foxley,  who will talk about the he situation in Afghanistan. He is an independent analyst running a political and military research company specialising in issues concerning Afghanistan and the surrounding region. Foxley has worked for the UK government as a defense analyst. Furthermore, he worked at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute for four years.
