“TTIP & CETA: Rhetoric and Reality” with MEP Agnes Jongerius
05-09-2016 at 20:00 - 21:30Free
On the first Monday of the academic year, Agnes Jongerius, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and one of the most influential Dutch women, will visit the SIB. She will explain what the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) entail and discuss the pros and cons. This activity is organized by our very own Introduction Committee and is, like so many SIB activities, open and free for everybody!
Currently, Ms Jongerius is a member of the European Parliament. She is fully committed to creating employment opportunities, improving working conditions and stimulating fair trade. Her dedication to social affairs can also be traced back to her past. She studied social economic history in Utrecht and consequently started her career at the Federation Dutch Labour Movement (FNV). After working in different functions, she became the chairman of FNV. Furthermore, this dedication can be concluded by her active membership of the PvdA, the Dutch Labour Party.
Ms. Jongerius will be joined by Professor Steven Brakman who is a professor of International Economics at the University of Groningen. Prof. Brakman is an expert on globalisation and the effects which trade agreements might have on the global economy. He has appeared in the media as an advocate for making TTIP a major theme of the next parliamentary elections and is the perfect candidate to engage in a discussion with Ms. Jongerius. The moderator will be Juul Oosterhuis, (former) board member of SIB-Groningen.
